 About us

The club was founded in 1881 and our members have been sailing a variety of vessels in and around King's Lynn since then. We are a Royal Yachting Association affiliated members club, run by, and for the members, to promote the sport of sailing and social activities connected with it. Our current membership is just over 500, with the majority of them being social members.

Ferry Lane (King's Lynn)

Set in the heart of historic King's Lynn and on the east bank of the river Gt Ouse, the clubhouse occupies a unique waterfront setting next to the Ferry steps. This is the home of our social activities and our clubhouse has recently had a significant amount of refurbishment including real fire look gas fires, new decor, carpeting, smoke extraction equipment and seating.  Having finished the bar area we have moved onto the snooker room where the roof has been replaced we can move onto refurbishing the actual room.

We race on the river when tides are favourable, see River Racing, the strong tides and large tidal range ( up to 27 feet) provide a challenge to the sailors. Meanwhile the spectators are kept close to the action and watch the race from the club balcony whilst still enjoying all the clubhouse facilities. Ferry Lane has it's own attractions including:

  • Wide fast flowing river, with launching from a concrete slipway (large enough for 22 ft trailer sailors)
  • Big course in the middle of town, with excellent spectator viewing
  • Newly built changing rooms and showers for men and women. Toilet and changing facilities with wheelchair access.
  • A thriving social club which provides excellent hot food at lunchtimes and a full range of social activities (see Social scene)
  • The best real ale in the country! Don't take our word for it, we were voted the best National Real Ale Club in 1999 by the Campaign for Real Ale
  • Clubhouse open normal pub hours, except Sundays. Club always open during racing

Saddlebow

An inland stretch of non-tidal water at the end of the Fenland drainage system. We enjoy exclusive rights over about one and a quarter miles of safe water which has a number of attractions over local alternatives:

  • Easy launching from our two slipways
  • Start lines less than 50 yards from the slipways
  • Non tidal water for safe sailing with consistent start times
  • Safe secure boat parking
  • A newly rebuilt clubhouse (Thanks to a grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts) with showers, kitchen facilities and plenty of room for non-sailors to keep out of the elements
  • Viewing balcony with full views of the water
  • Wheelchair access to toilet and changing facilities
  • Open to the prevailing SW winds, no tree shadows to spoil the sailing
  • Water used by local canoeing, rowing and long distance swimming clubs when we are not sailing

The club owns a number of sailing dinghies for use by members (please note that they may not all be available due to maintenance):

TOPPER For those of you who haven't seen one, Toppers are made of plastic so are pretty robust, they are easily sailed by teenagers or adults, they are easy to rig, launch and sail and are probably the most popular single handed training boat in the country.

LASER The most well known single hander in the world. The same (a bit older and maybe slower) as the dinghy Ben Ainslie won Olympic Gold with in Sydney. Two boats are available with a choice of full size or the smaller 4.7 rig for the lightweight and younger sailors.

SUPERGRADUATE A GRP two person boat that is ideal for 1 adult and a child/teenager. Easy to rig and sail, great for beginners and the more experienced alike.

ENTERPRISE  A well known 2 person racing dinghy, but easily managed by beginners as well. Join the thousands of people who have learnt to sail in Enterprises. (The ones with the blue sails) Ours is a simply rigged GRP version laid out for cruising or learning, complete with proper cruising sails.

420  A dinghy designed for the teenagers, ideal for two but can be re-rigged and sailed single-handed if need be. An ideal boat to get back into the sport with. Not currently rigged for spinnakers, so it is not too full of strange bits of rope!!

We also have a small amount of sailing clothing and buoyancy aids for those just starting out, so if you are at all interested come down and talk to us, we often have experienced sailors looking for new crews so you may not even need a boat or be able to sail to get out and have a go.

During organised sailing our one or both of our fast safety boats are on the water for your safety, but like most clubs we also expect sailors to help each other out as well as being responsible for their own actions.

Drive past Norfolk Arena (Speedway Stadium) take 2nd exit at small roundabout. After 200 yards, the road turns sharp left, ahead is a single track road, go down there alongside the power station. The sailing club entrance is directly in front of you as the road bears right. This map shows you where our Saddlebow clubhouse is located:
