 Commodore's Chat

February 2008

Hello to all Club members both new and old.

By now, many of you will have met our new member of staff, Sandra Bone (no relation to Ron or Penny). The Committee hopes that Sandra enjoys her time here and I am sure you will all do your bit to make her feel welcome. You may also have noticed the new gaming machine in the entrance lobby. Hopefully the regular players will enjoy learning all the foibles of the new machine and not miss the old one too much. For people who have not yet tried it, why not give it a go? It offers much better odds of winning than the lottery or Premium Bonds and any profit goes to a very good cause…….. the OASC!

The Club’s annual dinner dance is to be held at Knight’s Hill Hotel on Friday 4th April.  The evening includes a three-course meal with wine, and a local group providing live music for dancing.  We have to give numbers to the hotel well in advance so if you want to come please book your tickets early with Penny.

How are you all getting on with the door being locked?  There remains a small number of members who either don’t, or can’t, remember the number and so keep ringing the bell.  The code number is printed on the back of your membership card so even if you cannot remember the number, and let's face it, it is not the most difficult one to remember, just bring your card with you and look at the back of it! The light above the door has been fixed so you can see the numbers easily.  We have a plan to encourage people to open the door for themselves.  If you insist on having the door opened for you, then in the near future you can expect to be met by someone waving the RNLI lifeboat tin in your face expecting a donation to charity in exchange for entry!

Now, there is some good news and some bad news:…

The bad news is that as you may have read in the press, breweries have put up their prices to cover rises in raw materials and transport. Up until now we have been able to absorb these price rises, but it has now reached the point where we must increase the price of our beers. Rest assured that Ron still spends many hours searching out the best deals for us all, but the price increases are inevitable.  We had hoped to hold on until after the budget but we couldn’t, so there is a chance that there will be more increases after our beloved Chancellor has his way.  As food prices have also increased significantly we will be revising our menu prices as well.

The good news is that the Mart should be over by the time you read this and so parking near the Club should return to normal and also the sailing season is upon us again. I know that this does not affect all of you but we are a Sailing Club after all (there is a big hint in the name you know!!)  We commence racing on the first Sunday in March down at Saddlebow, start time being 10.30.  So if you have some spare time on a Sunday why not come down to Saddlebow and see what it is all about.
