 Commodore's Chat

May 2008

Well the AGM has been and gone with no major upsets. The Committee remains largely as before, with the exception of James Claxton being voted in as Vice Commodore (replacing Ron Bone who remains as Club Secretary). Geoff Wright and Barry Sprunt have stood down from the Committee. My thanks go to both of them, especially Barry for all his years of hard work on the sailing side of things.

The past year has been fairly steady on the financial front with bar and food sales running about the same as last year but an increase in profits of £4000 was due to a higher working profit margin. Running costs such as wages, fuel etc have gone up but repair cost were down and overall a net loss of just over £5000 was achieved. The Club remains financially viable and we endeavour to put any profit back into the Club to improve facilities and assets for the membership as a whole.

Use and costs of the Function Room were raised. The standard cost for the hire of the room is £120 per night (7pm till midnight). This covers cleaning, heating, setting-up, extra bar staff and post event cleaning.  We are restricted on the number of times can we can use the room for functions and are very keen not to upset any of our neighbours with noise after 11pm. We have looked at other uses for the room (but not found any) and so sensible, financially viable suggestions are welcome – please send them to me via the website or in writing at the Club.

The room will soon need decorating, as does the wooden railings and furniture on the balcony, I wonder if there are any Club members, with good DIY skills, with some time on their hands that are prepared to make an offer of help?  Again names and offers to me please.

The Club is holding its first Families' Day of the year at Saddlebow on Sunday 22nd June. The bar-b-que will be lit to cook your own food from 1pm onwards, and experienced sailors will be on hand to take people out to give sailing a try.  Our resident band should also be around to provide musical entertainment – thanks guys. Come down after one on the Sunday for a nice afternoon in the sun.  Please note, as you can imagine, this event is totally weather dependant and may be cancelled/ curtailed at short notice if the weather is unsuitable.

On the previous weekend (Sat 14th) we are hosting our Supernova and Streaker Open meeting at Saddlebow. All the competitors are invited to the Club during the evening so don’t be surprised if it is busier than normal and please make all our guests welcome.

Enjoy the summer (while it lasts) and keep an eye out for our river races as they always provide an enjoyable spectacle for the spectators (and sometimes even for the competitors!!)

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
