A very autumnal welcome to you all. Well it definitely seems like summer has well and truly gone, we have had Halloween and Guy Fawkes day, so I guess the countdown to Christmas has started. By now many of you will have seen the new carpet in the snooker room (and hopefully on the stair way as well). There is still work to do in the stairway/upstairs hallway area, but we hope to get these done soon. As the weather has started to turn, the smoking ban will start to have more of a bite. Please remember that smoking inside the Club premises is AGAINST THE LAW. The Committee has provided areas for the smokers and these must be used. Anyone found smoking in the non-smoking areas will be asked to leave the premises immediately. Sorry if this seems harsh but the financial penalties for the Club are too severe for us to be caught. On a different note, we now offer a better range of quality hot drinks. With the recent purchase of a hot drinks machine, we can now offer quality fresh filtered coffee, café crema and hot chocolate. Instant coffee is still available for those who prefer it. Decaffeinated coffee could be available if there is sufficient demand for it – please let the Committee know if you would like this option. Hopefully the issues regarding the beer stillages are nearly resolved and we have ordered another two barrel racks which should enable us to offer not only the two regular ales (Wherry/JHB and Greyhound) but also a good choice of guest beers for those who like to try something different. Our sailors continue to be very active not only at our races but around the country, and reports about the successes of Club sailors and Ian Bradley in particular can be found in many issues of Yachts and Yachting as he continues to win most of the Streaker events he enters – well done Ian. (I just wish he would realise that his boat is supposed to be slower than mine and finish behind me like he should!!) Racing carries on every Sunday up to and including Boxing Day, so if you are at a loss for something to do on Boxing Day, why not come down to Saddlebow and watch the sailors in action? One more thing to report on is the loss of Patronage of the Club by H.M. The Queen. For reasons unknown to us the Patronage has been withdrawn and so the look of Club stationery, rulebooks and racing programmes will change in due course. Bob Pope Commodore OASC |
