Are you all ready for the Christmas celebrations, or are you more like me and trying to ignore it all until the last minute? What has been going on with the Club over the last few weeks? Well, all the carpet fitting has now been finished in and around the snooker room and this has made a big improvement to the look of the area. We hope to get the ceiling in the upstairs hallway repaired soon and although we would have preferred to get it done first, it was not to be. We are still waiting for the gutters over the boatshed to be repaired (which should stop the leaks in the toilets) but as you can imagine this work is very weather dependant and once that is done it will bring to an end our current round of repairs/maintenance and upgrades to the club buildings. As you can imagine with such an old building a lot of work goes on behind the scenes and there is always far more preparatory work to be done before the bits that you can see are tackled! The next major project will probably be the balcony, but this work is a way off yet. The stillage in the cellar is now all sorted out and we now have space for eight barrels on the rack (not all available for sale as some need settling time) plus room for about six or seven barrels cooling down (more applicable in the summer) - so normal service on the choice of beers should now be resumed. I have a few advance dates for your diaries for next year: Sailors' prize giving: Sunday 24th February Annual Dinner and Dance: Friday 4th April Club AGM: 23rd April Family days at Saddlebow: 22nd June and 17th August As you may have noticed, we have been missing a member of staff recently – we all hope Doreen will soon be back with us. In the meantime, I would like to express my thanks to Sue, Nikki and the others for all their hard work in filling the gap and keeping up the high standards we are used to. Keep your eyes open for details of Christmas opening hours and festive events. Finally for this year, on behalf of all the Committee may I wish you and your families a pleasant and relaxing Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Bob Pope Commodore OASC |
