Commodore's Chat
July 2008
My
apologies for the lack of a Commodore’s Chat for last month, but I was away on
holiday during the Committee meeting.
As
you will have noticed Sandra is off at the moment, she suffered a mishap on her
bike and has her arm in plaster – we all wish her well and a full and speedy
recovery. As Sandra’s accident coincided
with Nikki being on holiday we have been very short of staff for a few days and
so the lunchtime menu has been severely restricted. Please accept our apologies
for this and we hope to be back to a more normal menu soon. Whilst Sandra
recovers we have taken on a temporary member of staff to help out at
lunchtimes. I hope you will all make Rebecca welcome.
In some of the previous monthly chats I have
mentioned that the next major project would be the veranda. The Committee has
accepted a quote from Drake Towage to replace all the decking and supporting
woodwork on the veranda, as well as installing proper steps and a handrail
leading down along the riverside pathway.
This work needs to be done and it needs to be done whilst we have long
hours of daylight and good weather (yes I know the weather is not being
particularly summery but even we can’t change that!). We have a tentative start
date of Monday18th August and the work is scheduled for 10 working days.
Because of the nature of the work, the veranda will be completely closed for
the duration. We do realise the inconvenience of this but there is no
alternative. This means the only smoking area will be upstairs outside the snooker
room and that tables for meals will be limited.
We
are hoping to get the front of the clubhouse redecorated before the work starts
on the veranda but this is not yet confirmed. Please keep your eyes peeled for
any notices detailing closure of the veranda during any work.
On
the sailing front, the Family Day had to be cancelled due to very strong winds,
hopefully the one in August will fair better. We held a very successful Open
Meeting at Saddlebow with competitors coming from far and wide to be beaten by
our Club sailors – congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the helpers
who made the event run smoothly.
Monday
28th July will see the OASC hosting the North West Norfolk Sailing
Association event on the river at lunchtime. This means that there will be lots
of sailors and spectators using the Club so it will be busy and the lunchtime
menu may be restricted for the day. Why not come down and watch the racing
(which normally attracts some 30-40 boats).
With staff and volunteers' holidays coming up soon,
Club opening outside of core hours (Mon-Sat 12.00- 15.00 and 19.00 – 23.00)
will be restricted. We cannot guarantee that the Club will be open outside core
hours so I strongly suggest you phone before hand before you set off to prevent
a possible wasted journey. Notices will go up nearer the time.
