Nice and sunny for race 3
Nice and sunny for race 3
The Spring Series concluded with an easy series win for Ian Bradley (streaker) with John
Windibank (comet) as runner-up. What with Easter being pretty early this year it was a short
series, and with only one discard consistency and a good attendance record were key!

Busy start area, lots of starts for R5
Busy start area, lots of starts for R5
Race 5 took a bit of starting: The EA had thoughtfully opened all the sluices, and combined
with massive enthusiasm from the sailors, pretty nearly everyone was OCS! After the resultant general
recall, we managed a perfect re-run and everyone was OCS again. On the third attempt either the
number of early starters was under control or the RO had run out of patience, because the race finally
got under way.
It would be nice to give a blow by blow account of this race, but unfortunately your humble scribe (ok dinghy)
rolled in on the first downwind leg, and by the time he'd dragged his boat out of the undergrowth (plastered
in mud and with reeds in his hair) the nearest boat was quarter of a mile ahead, so what actually went on at the
front of the fleet is a mystery. I can definitely state that Simon Neale (supernova) and Dan Pemberton
and Mike Pembrey (albacore) sailed brilliantly and were extremely hard to catch.

In the final race of the series, Paul Bloom (supernove) hurtled off into the distance,
finished first by miles and took the race on handicap. Ian Bradley was second, but still won the series.
Paul Pearson (laser radial) sailed a blinder and would certainly have been third, but tragically
his mainsheet flipped out of the jammer on the last beat and he fell in to windward, losing out by
a few seconds to John Windibank (comet) and Dave Cooper (ok dinghy), who expressed their deep sorrow at
his misfortune with ear-to-ear grins.

Bob Pope, R3 winner
Bob Pope, R3 winner
After the chill last week, a nice sunny morning brought the sailors
flooding out of the woodwork. The light easterly breeze went really patchy
as the first thermals popped off so the racing felt like a bit of a lottery:
a group raced off in a patch of breeze, then the rest of the fleet caught
them up when they cruised into a flat patch. Bob Pope (megabyte) got the
best start, led from start to finish, and took the race on handicap, which
shows that going on holiday is good for him.
Ben Charnley (laser radial) had the edge on the other 3 laser rads and just
squeezed home ahead of Simon Turner (europe) but lost out on corrected time,
only getting 6th overall. The good weather finally got the Pemburys out of
hibernation: Joseph racing his Pico while Mike took the front
seat in Dan Pemberton's Albacore.

Race 4: start
Race 4: start
In race 4, Paul Pearson (usually laser radial) and Ian Bradley (usually streaker)
swapped boats, and (probably from force of habit) the streaker got a great start and stormed
away down the first leg of the course in the lead. Unfortunately the breeze had got even patchier,
and it wasn't too long before Paul sailed into a totally blank spot and the pursuing
fleet caught him. Meanwhile, Paul Bloom (supernova), who'd been OCS and restarted,
was charging through the fleet, but at the finish the light weather maestro John
Windibank (comet) took the handicap result by over a minute, with the next six boats
only seconds apart on corrected time.

First mark, Race 1
First mark, Race 1
The first races of the Spring series were sailed in a chilly northerly breeze: it was
quite a bit colder than the February Freezer series, and just 5 boats turned out. To add
interest the Environment Agency had 3 sluice gates open so there was a brisk north-going
current: it meant the beats were really speedy and the runs were really slow! At the finish
Ian Bradley (streaker) took the race from Ian Haynes (laser radial)

Simon Neale admiring his new boat from all angles
Simon Neale admiring his new boat from all angles
In the second race, the breeze eased off a touch and the sun came out, so
although it wasn't any warmer, at least it looked a lot better! Simon Neale had been
giving his new (to him) supernova a fairly complicated rinse between races, and Ian Bradley
gave him a bit of coaching during race 2, leaving the way open for Ian Haynes to charge to
victory and take the series lead. Hopefully, spring will have sprung by next weekend and it'll
be hot and sunny. Or at least a bit less cold!
