Only a 3 boat turn-out for Race 5: Sharon rolled in before the
start and decided to call it a day so without a quorum of 3 for race 6,
the race got binned.
Apparently, the Environment agency were doing weird and wonderful stuff
with the sluices which were 'going up and down like the nether apparel of
a lady of negotiable affection' (according to Mr Sprunt) (at least, that's
roughly what the Sailing Sec says he said).

I can't say much about race 3 as I was still busily dropping nuts
and mis-assembling shackles. The incident I did notice was the elegant
somersault as Paul Bloom backflipped out of his newly purchased OK. Paul
scored max points for artistic merit, DNF'd the race and learnt that the
toestraps of fifty quid boats aren't all that reliable. Apart from that,
the weather was light southerly with bright sunshine, and for the first time
in the 'Late Spring' series it actually felt like spring!

Pre-start, race 4
Pre-start, race 4
Race 4 was pretty shifty, both in direction and windspeed: as the breeze
was (on average) pretty much straight along the channel some skill and a
stack of good luck were required! Superior skill took Ian Bradley (Streaker) into a
decent lead, but the pursuit overhauled him when the luck ran out and
he sailed into a light patch. In the event, he crossed the line a few yards ahead
and won by miles on handicap. Right behind were Bob Pope (Megabyte), Dave Cooper,
(OK) and Ian Haynes (laser), who'd been swapping positions continually.
These three just saved their time from the usually-triumphant John Windibank (Comet),
who'd looked good during the first lap, but dropped back a bit subsequently.
Joseph Pembury (Pico) saw off Paul Bloom (OK), who was taking a break from swimming, and
in turn beat Dan Pemberton and Mike Pembrey (Topper Argo), who'd probably have liked
a bit more breeze.

The Late Spring series got underway with a small but select bunch
of competitors. In the first race Ian Haynes demonstrated his trademark 'kamikaze'
technique of zooming along the line on port tack seconds before the start,
but his (presumed) target, Bob Pope, (who WAS on starboard) side-stepped him neatly, got
easily the best start, and went on to take line honours. The upwind legs generally were
rather tricky as they were either a fetch or a very starboard biased beat depending on
the windshift at any particular moment. Ben Charnley ran foul of this on
the first leg when he tacked to clear his wind and then got a
massive header. You had to be sympathetic - he'd done the right thing and
totally run out of luck!
Aboard the Pembury's Topper Argo, Joseph was drafted in as a late
substitute for Dan Pemberton, who was even more absent than usual. Mike ran
the kite up and down and trapezed briefly and they looked to have a pretty
efficient race, but their handicap makes success elusive. In this instance it was
Ian Haynes who got the handicap win from Bob Pope.

In race 2, Ben Charnley got an excellent start (his turn to sidestep
Ian 'Port Start' Haynes), but Bob Pope powered through to leeward of him
and went on for a handicap win. The breeze actually eased off a bit during the race
which Joseph Pembury described as quite a bit more difficult. Apparently
the direction was making it tricky to fly an assymetric kite successfully.
