Ian Haynes, series winner
Ian Haynes, series winner
Ian Haynes (Laser) took the Spring Series by a 2 point margin from John Windibank (Comet). Bob Pope
(Megabyte) was third, and Dave Cooper and Mouse Emery (National 12) fourth. There was plenty of absenteeism in the
rest of the fleet, so the rest of the results are more a reflection of DNCs than boat speed!

Spring Series races 11/12
Spring Series races 11/12
The final races of the Spring Series were raced in superb spring conditions with wall-to-wall sunshine and
a warm southerly breeze that perked up a bit during the morning and swung a tad more westerly. In race 11 Ian Bradley (Streaker)
got the best start and stormed off up the beat with Paul Bloom (Supernova) and the National 12 crew contending for next place.
The series contenders (Ian Haynes and John Windibank) both managed to take a dip: John rolled in at the gybe mark and Ian sportingly
responded by missing his toestraps going up the beat. The National 12 crew managed to confuse the course (no surprises there!) so
race 11 went to Ian Bradley followed by Paul Bloom with John Windibank third (very quick capsize recovery!) and Spike Turner (Europe) fourth.
Race 12 went pretty much the same way, but with a bit more breeze, making the gybe marks a bit interesting if you happened to
coincide with a gust and with enough wind to start planing down the runs.

Smooth operator: Spike Turner (Europe), gybe mark
Smooth operator: Spike Turner (Europe), gybe mark
Springtime is when wildlife comes out of hibernation, so this was just the right day to welcome
back Simon Neale (Supernova) and Spike Turner (Europe), as they emerged blinking into the daylight. It was particularly
the right day for Spike because it was nice and breezy and that's how he likes it,
scoring a pair of bullets and going really fast. Simon was more on a spring cleaning kick, giving his rig a nice
rince (several times) and getting all that nasty salt (he also sails at Wells SC) out of his sailing gear. Paul Bloom (Supernova) took line
honours in Race 5 and was second on handicap, ahead of the lasers of Ben Charnley and Ian Haynes.
In race 6, Paul Bloom and Simon Neale tried synchronised swimming round their Supernovas. I'm not sure how they
scored on artistic merit but it entertained the rest of the fleet. This time Ben Charnley was runner up to Spike Turner with
Ian Haynes third.

Race 3, start
Race 3, start
It was good to welcome Bob Pope (Megabyte) and Ian Haynes (Laser) back from holiday. Bob went to Norway and saw
icebergs, glaciers, whales, trolls, the Northern Lights and Father Christmas practising aerobatics in his sleigh. Ian went to
Scotland and saw (..um...) Edinburgh. If they saw any wind they didn't bring any home! The day was gloomy and mild
and what breeze there was wandered erratically between south and west. As usual John Windibank (Comet) knew where to go: he started Race 3 miles
to leeward of everyone else but in so much breeze it was probably almost perceptible, and shot off into an immediate lead. The rest of
the fleet overhauled him eventually but he won easily on handicap.
In Race 4 John's luck didn't hold so well: he wandered into a flat patch early on and Bob Pope got far enough ahead for a handicap win
with the Comet second. Ian Haynes took third in both races, going rather fast with his new radial sail. It was a Christmas present, apparently,
and next year we're hoping Cheryl will give him something rather less accelerating. Maybe a deckchair?

A stiff breeze and horizontal rain: must be spring!
A stiff breeze and horizontal rain: must be spring!
As start time for the first race of the Spring Series approached, the weather was going downhill
pretty steeply: horizontal rain and a stiff southerley were enough to convince anyone with half a brain that
this wasn't the ideal morning for a sail! Those of us without enough nouse to spot the meteorological hint had quite
a thrilling time, with some rip-snorting gusts blasting through. Joseph Pembrey (Pico) and Ben Charnley (Laser) were
equal on one capsize each (I think) and Mike Pembrey (Topper) and Ben were equal on one win, one second each at the end of the day.
Mouse Emery and Dave Cooper (Miracle) tucked in a reef to show that seamanship is not yet dead and trotted round for a pair of thirds.
The races were shortish but absolutely nobody complained!
